HEIRS OF THE SUN : ROOTS IN EBONY
Herederas del sol: Raices de ebano

A collection that transcends borders. These works capture the resilient spirit of Afro-descendant women, whose history of resistance and strength has blossomed into vibrant colors and joy wherever they are. Whether these women are in Colombia, somewhere in Africa, their essence is universal.

These female figures, proud of their ebony skin, carry with them a legacy of struggle and renewal. They are heirs to a history that could have been one of pain, yet they transform it into life, color, and vital energy. Their bodies and smiles reflect the richness of their African roots, a connection with the earth, the sun, and the nature that surrounds them. In every corner where these women are present—whether in the bustle of a market or the tranquility of a rural landscape—one can sense the aroma of fruits, the song of birds, the echo of the jungle, and the heartbeat of the land.

This collection is a celebration of life and the unbreakable ability of these women to flourish despite adversity, expressed through bursts of color and forms full of movement.

It is a dance between history, folklore, and the strength of nature, fused with their identity, leaving an indelible mark of color, light, and resilience.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Rafael Lago, Colombian and Spanish, is an artist who transforms his experiences into a profound visual narrative, evoking the vast landscapes and jungles of his native Colombia. Since childhood, while riding through dense jungles, visiting remote mountain villages, and traversing seemingly endless rivers, Rafael has cultivated a visceral connection with nature, freedom, and the mystery of the elements. These early experiences are the lifeblood of his art, a passion that, like the echo of his roots, permeates every stroke and color.

Educated in Fine Arts in San Francisco, California, his mastery of technique combined with a visionary drive that led him to Barcelona, where he refined his skills in classical muralism. Rafael became a creator of dreamlike spaces, designing stages for theater, ballet, and opera, and projecting his visions onto large-scale murals, always seeking to capture the soul of his subjects. Yet, although his art spans diverse forms, painting remains his deepest refuge and purpose.

Rafael Lago is an artist who transforms the mystical into the tangible, the ancestral into the contemporary, leaving viewers immersed in an experience that awakens both the senses and the soul. His works bear witness to a restless spirit that seeks to capture the essence of the human, the natural, and the eternal in every brushstroke.
